Jack Sikes’ interest in art started at age 6 when he won a drawing contest, and continued throughout his education in a one-room schoolhouse in Girdwood, Alaska. The artist states, “I started at a young age in Alaska, in a home with no running water and no electricity. Entertainment was something you found for yourself, and I used to sketch on any surface I could get my hands on.” At the age of 17, Jack hitchhiked 4,000 miles along the Alcan Highway to Sacramento, California, when he attended American River Junior College. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1965 and in four years, traveled 80 different ports and circumnavigated the globe, a feat which earned him admission into the Order of Magellan.
Jack settled in Worcester when his duty in the Merchant Marines was completed, and for three years attended the Worcester Art Museum. Under the tutelage of Leon Hovesepian, he mastered the techniques for oils, water colors, and acrylics. Jack is intrigued by the sizes and shapes of places in the world around him, and captures many local landscapes and houses in his works. He recently sold his barber shop in Spencer, but still divides his days between the shop and the art studio.
