The Aurora Gallery

The Aurora, now on the National Register of Historic Places, was built as a luxury residential hotel in 1898 on the rural edge of downtown (there were still apple orchards behind the building in 1910). The automatic locking mechanism for elevators was invented for this building after a woman took a nearly fatal fall into its elevator shaft.

Renovated in the late 1990s, the hotel rooms are now residents, and the restaurant is now the building's lobby. The reception area became ArtsWorcester’s upper gallery and offices, complete with original architectural detail, and the main gallery area below once served as the bar and dance hall.
