Joy of Color by Mary Calkins

January 14 – April 9, 2011

Born in 1953, Mary Calkins currently works in a studio in the rural and secluded environment of a central Massachusetts woodland which is her family’s home.   Her life has been many years evolving but a love of art is one thing which always has been certain.

After several years of self exploration she renewed studies at Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, leading to a B.F.A. degree with honors for excellence in painting in 1994 and has seriously pursued a creative professional career working as an independent artist since 1996.  Her development as a painter continues to be a work in progress.

Over the years Mary has explored the mediums of painting, printmaking and photography, of which many influences can be seen merging together and evolving in exciting ways as her work expands. She has developed several unique techniques, and is always searching for new ways to combine multiple mediums, loving best the process of creation and exploration.  In recent years Mary has found an affinity for modern abstraction and it has marked a turning point in her work both professionally and personally.  It clearly resonates with her nature and is a direction she is rapidly building on which will only continue to grow.
