Love Hope Sex Dreams features works by Don Hartmann, the 2010 Worcester Cultural Commission Fellow. The WCC, now called the Worcester Arts Council, granted Hartmann an award for this large scale painting project. This project is part of Hartmann’s ongoing narrative of figurative works, posed in tension with the surface texture of the art; he combines tid-bits from people watching and imagination into candid gestures, his subjects are at once preoccupied and thoughtful in their captured situations. Hartmann has enlarged this series to further investigate the process of mark making and rendering utilizing the visual impact of a surface measured in feet rather than inches.
Don expresses his perspective on this body of work: “I look at photography constantly. I kind of stink as a grandiose artist. I’m dumpster diving…bits from here and there. Fame, excess, longing, fear…, the human experience that could stop any second or go on for 20 years.”
