"Reflections on Objects" Opening Season Art Show at QCC September 15For Immediate Release: September 1, 2004 Worcester--ARTSWorcester/Quinsigamond Community College Art Gallery's fall exhibit opens on September 15 with Ms. Lisa Marie Maillet's "Reflections on Objects." Her works will be on display at the QCC Administration Building Corridor Art Gallery on Wednesday, September 15 and will run through November 12. The general public is invited to attend the Opening Night Gallery Talk and Reception starting at 5:00 pm in Conference Room 107A. There is never an admission fee, and viewing hours after the 15th are Monday-Friday, 9:00 am to 7:00 pm and Saturdays 9:00 am till noon. Maillet will exhibit 15 representational works in oils and watercolors of brightly reflective objects such as pinwheels and wrapped candy. An art major in college, Maillet decided to move to New York after graduation, where she completed course at the School of Visual Arts. While in the Big Apple, she looked at art "everywhere" and visited the Museum of Modern Art frequently. A discovery in 1999 of the work of Janet Fist in a gallery on Fifth Avenue is all that it took. "I was amazed at the work I saw, never before seeing large-scale colorful still life subject matter," she commented. "I remember thinking I could do something like that for the rest of my life and be pretty happy." Other inspirations for her have been the works of Wayne Thiebaud, Neil Welliver, Joseph Raphael, and Patricia Forrester. Maillet feels that images in life are small and are frequently overlooked. "Making them larger than life forces the viewer to see what they may normally miss," she feels. "My works focus on the patterns and reflections of the objects so that the object becomes secondary," she says. She uses only six pure colors plus white so that every mixture is her own and not out of a tube someone else created. The Southbridge artist holds a BFA in painting from the University of Massachusetts- Amherst and is a member of ArtsWorcester, the Quinebaug Valley Council for the Arts, and the Women's Caucus for Art. She has exhibited her works in MA and NY and has won a number of first place art awards. On display through November 12, "Reflections on Objects" can be seen in the Corridor Gallery, first floor of the Administration Building, Quinsigamond Community College, 670 West Boylston St., Worcester, MA. info@artsworcester.orgLast modified: Oct 17, 2004, 14:00 EDT |
